Phillips Auction Listings of Rare F.P. Journe Watches Shift Valuation Baselines
Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola's personal prototype leads a wave of early independent timepieces entering the autumn sales to meet liquidity demands.

The sudden secondary-market emergence of rare F.P. Journe prototypes and pre-production watches at Phillips is shifting the valuation baselines and provenance diligence standards for independent horology.
According to Watchesbysjx, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is consigning his personal F.P. Journe FFC prototype to cover liquidity needs after his self-funded film grossed only $15 million[1] at the box office. This high-profile liquidation coincides with a broader influx of early independent watches capitalizing on peak pricing, highlighted by Hodinkee's account of a record $13.9 million[2] result for an early Chronomètre à Résonance earlier in the year.
Watchesbysjx detailed that F.P. Journe rarely sells prototypes publicly, with the few existing examples having been sold by the watchmaker long before the brand achieved its current commercial scale.[1] The FFC model itself represents a collaboration, as the concept originated from a design Coppola pitched directly to François-Paul Journe years ago.[1] These prototypes feature a blackened hand and silvered minute scale, with the alternative example remaining in the watchmaker's private collection. The mechanical hand indicates hours using ancient finger-counting methods, a horological challenge inspired by early prosthetic experiments.
In addition to the Coppola prototype, Phillips is offering a pre-production Chronomètre à Résonance, which Hodinkee documented was delivered to its original owner in 1999,[2] which marks the earliest commercial series. This model represents the integration of synchronized balances in a wristwatch, a design highly coveted by collectors. The emergence of these early examples from original owners highlights how peak valuations are drawing long-held, museum-grade pieces back into circulation.
When highly restricted assets move from private, long-term custody into the public market due to external liquidity pressures, the traditional valuation models for unique or prototype pieces must be adjusted. Fiduciaries and advisors managing watch portfolios cannot rely solely on historical manufacturer-controlled scarcity. The sudden availability of previously unobtainable prototypes alters the comparable-sales baseline, introducing volatility to collateral valuations and insurance replacement costs. The available evidence does not disclose the reserve prices or private contract terms for these consignments, meaning advisors cannot yet determine whether these listings represent a permanent expansion of prototype supply or a temporary, liquidity-driven anomaly.

Phillips to Offer Francis Ford Coppola's Personal F.P. Journe "FFC"Oct 24, 2025
Source passage
Acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola, best known for films like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now , is selling the watch that bears his name, the F.P. Journe FFC – it is FFC’s FFC. Mr Coppola’s personal FFC prototype is expected to be the top lot at Phillips’ New York auction taking place in December. The timing of the auction is opportune for Mr Coppola, who funded his latest – and arguably most ambitious – film, Megalopolis by selling a vineyard and then borrowing against his other holdings in the California wine industry. Against a US$120 million budget, Megalopolis grossed only $15 million, and now the legendary director is auctioning off much of his prized watch collection. Positioned at the top of the F.P. Journe collection alongside the Sonnerie Souveraine and Astronomic Souverain e, each FFC is engraved with the customer’s name. In this case, that name is Francis Ford Coppola. That makes it arguably the FFC to own, even surpassing the unique tantalum example made for Only Watch 2021, which sold for CHF4.5 million. In this context, the estimate of over US$1 million seems conservative. The unique FFC made for Only Watch in 2021. F.P. Journe rarely sells prototypes. Only a handful of the brand’s prototypes have ever emerged for sale publicly, and all of those were originally sold by Mr Journe well before the firm achieved the success it does today. F.P. Editors' Picks Our Favorite Watches From Geneva Watch Days 2026 (And Beyond) Introducing The MB&F SP One Pavée (Live Pics) Introducing Victorinox Maverick (Live Pics) An extra-early example that could become another record result for a rare watch from the celebrated French watchmaker. Here we go again. It's been a blue ribbon auction year so far, particularly for rare examples of timepieces from independents, including F.P. Journe. During a record-setting spring auction season marked by a stunning shift in valuations and collector interest in top-notch independent watchmakers, an early Chronomètre à Résonance (no. 007) fetched a record $13.9 million, making it the most expensive F.P. Journe watch ever sold at auction and the fifth most expensive watch of all time. Mark wrote up a great piece on the record-breaking result that dives deep into the history of the Résonance and why it's such an important achievement in haute horology, and why it is François-Paul Journe's signature watch. With the prototype produced in 1998, and with 'Souscription' commercial pieces produced and delivered beginning in 2000, Journe's Chronomètre à Résonance marks the first time that the concept of " résonance ," combining two movements with separate balances into a single case and bringing them into perfect synchronization, was brought to a wristwatch. For many collectors, the model represents the ul
