F.P. Journe Uses Charity Auctions to Benchmark Unique Watch Values
The strategy allows independent and major manufactures to resolve allocation bottlenecks for highly restricted releases while establishing transparent public valuation baselines.

F.P. Journe is utilizing recurring charity auctions to establish public pricing benchmarks for its unique timepieces. By routing these highly restricted, one-off creations through philanthropic sales rather than standard retail channels, the independent watchmaker bypasses traditional allocation friction while establishing transparent, record-setting public values that elevate its broader catalog.
According to Watchesbysjx, this strategy of utilizing philanthropic sales to establish public valuation baselines relies on a sequence of unique releases, including an initial charity commission in 2018[1] and a subsequent edition in 2022,[1] both of which bypassed traditional retail networks to establish public results.
The allocation dilemma is not unique to independent watchmakers. As reported by Watchpro, Rolex opted to auction a set of off-catalogue gem-set Daytonas through Phillips for charity because the manufacture was unable to decide which of its ultra-high-net-worth clients should receive them, despite intense private interest.[2] The proceeds from this public sale will benefit the Federer Foundation and the conservation organization Re:wild, illustrating how major manufactures leverage philanthropic platforms to resolve the distribution bottlenecks associated with highly coveted, off-catalogue releases.[2]
For the upcoming Monaco charity sale, F.P. Journe has introduced the unique Chronographe Fondation Prince Albert II De Monaco, featuring a burgundy-and-bone livery and a two-tone platinum and rose gold case. Watchesbysjx noted that while the design features a busy aesthetic with contrasting colors and oracle bone-inspired typography, the aesthetic details are secondary to the watch's rarity, as unique dials from the brand remain highly sought after.[1] The burgundy lacquered dial repeats the format established by prior editions created for the foundation, utilizing numerals inspired by oracle bones, the earliest known form of Chinese writing.[1] The contrast of the two-tone case, which combines platinum and rose gold, recalls the earliest tourbillon pocket watch designed by François-Paul Journe, but inverts the format with white metal for the front and rear bezels and rose gold for the body of the case.[1] The watch utilizes an evolved hand-wound movement architecture, removing the flyback function to create the brand's original conventional chronograph on this specific platform.[1]
While these charity events provide a transparent mechanism for price discovery, they present distinct valuation challenges for fiduciaries and advisors. The premium generated by philanthropic competition and the unique nature of these lots means that the final hammer prices reflect specialized auction dynamics rather than repeatable secondary-market values. Because of this, advisors must treat these public benchmarks as isolated data points rather than direct comparables for standard production models. The upcoming auctions will demonstrate whether this philanthropic allocation model can consistently sustain these elevated valuation baselines, or if the results remain restricted to the unique circumstances of the charity room.

F.P. Journe and H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco have announced the creation of the one-off Chronographe Fondation Prince Albert II De Monaco for the monarch’s upcoming charity auction. The Chronographe Fondation evolves the movement architecture of the Chronographe FB and adds the burgundy-and-bone livery that has become a calling card of the brand’s support for the Monaco-based charity. H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and François-Paul Journe. Image – F.P. Journe The design is undeniably busy with a mix contrasting colours and fonts. Yet taste is almost beside the point, since rare F.P. Journe watches with striking dials are amongst the hottest watches in the world at the moment. It also arrives amid sustained demand for unique watches created for charity. While unlikely to match the expected result of the Rolex Daytona “Four Seasons” set, it combines several proven ingredients that should supercharge its value. Stylistically, the watch is consistent with F.P. Journe’s three prior creations for the Foundation: the 2018 Chronographe Rattrapante , the Chronomètre Optimum of 2022, and the Chronomètre à Résonance of 2024. The latter hammered for US$2.98 million , setting a lofty precedent. The similar Chronographe FB retailed for CHF90,000 in 2024, but this point of reference is purely academic — uniqueness and charity will determine the result, and the Resonance result sugges

What is a philanthropic billionaire watch collector to do? On September 28, Phillips will auction four off-catalogue gem-set Rolex Daytonas with all proceeds going to brand ambassador Roger Federer’s Federer Foundation , and Re:wild , a conservation organisation co-founded by Leonardo DiCaprio, another ambassador for The Crown. Excitement is already at fever-pitch for the set, which was initially revealed privately at Watches and Wonders in April. Hodinkee’s Ben Clymer reported last week that more than 1,000 customers expressed interest in paying CHF 4 million for all four, but Rolex — unable to decide which of its ultra high net worth clients would get them — instead decided to sell them pu
