Cizeta-Moroder Prototype Estimated at $1,800,000 for Monterey Sale

RM Sotheby's is set to offer the historic 1988 Cizeta-Moroder prototype at its Monterey auction in 2026. The vehicle, which represents a unique intersection of pop culture and extreme automotive engineering, carries an estimate of $1,800,000, according to Robb Report. As the original development prototype for among the most ambitious supercar projects of the late twentieth century, the car represents a highly specialized asset for collectors of low-production, high-concept vehicles.

The creation of the Cizeta-Moroder was the result of an unlikely partnership between the legendary music producer Giorgio Moroder and Claudio Zampolli, a former Lamborghini engineer and dealer based in Los Angeles. Seeking to build the ultimate supercar, they enlisted Marcello Gandini, the designer behind the Lamborghini Miura and Countach. Gandini’s design for the vehicle was famously a variation of his original proposal for the Lamborghini Diablo, which Chrysler executives had toned down. The result was a dramatic, wide-body design featuring quad pop-up headlights and massive side strakes. The prototype was unveiled to the public in December of 1988 in Los Angeles and subsequently displayed at the Geneva Motor Show in 1989, as reported by RM Sotheby's.

Underneath the striking bodywork lay a unique powertrain: a transverse-mounted, multi-cylinder engine mated to a manual gearbox. This engineering layout gave the car its distinctive proportions. The prototype, which was the initial chassis built, differs significantly from the subsequent production models. According to RM Sotheby's, it features a unique interior design, distinct side air intakes, and a slightly different dashboard configuration. These prototype-specific details enhance its historical significance but also introduce unique considerations for preservation and maintenance, as many of the parts are entirely bespoke and cannot be sourced from standard production runs.

Following its promotional tour, the prototype remained in the personal collection of Giorgio Moroder for decades. Unlike many development mules that are destroyed or recycled by manufacturers, this car was preserved in highly original condition. In 2018, Moroder sent the vehicle to the renowned restoration facility Canepa for a comprehensive mechanical recommissioning. According to RM Sotheby's, the service cost over $13,000 and focused on ensuring the complex powerplant and its associated systems were fully functional. After years of ownership, Moroder decided to consign the car to RM Sotheby's Arizona sale in January of 2022, where it was acquired by the current owner.

The upcoming sale in 2026 will test the appetite of the ultra-high-net-worth market for rare, low-production supercars. While mainstream marques like Ferrari and Porsche enjoy deep, highly liquid secondary markets, boutique supercars from the late twentieth century occupy a more volatile niche. The Cizeta-Moroder, with only a handful of production units completed, represents extreme rarity. For collectors, the prototype chassis is the ultimate prize within this narrow category, combining the appeal of Gandini's pure design with direct provenance from the project's co-founder. However, the market for such niche assets relies heavily on finding the right individual who values historical novelty over the established dealer networks and parts availability of major brands.

From an advisory perspective, acquiring a prototype of this nature involves distinct risk and operational profiles. Unlike production models, prototypes often feature non-standard wiring, experimental materials, and undocumented engineering solutions. Wealth managers and art advisors must counsel clients that the cost of ownership extends far beyond the hammer price. While the 2018 service at Canepa addressed immediate mechanical needs, maintaining a unique prototype requires ongoing access to specialized engineering talent. As a result, the asset's collateral value for luxury lending is typically discounted compared to more liquid blue-chip collector cars, making it primarily a passion acquisition rather than a highly liquid treasury asset.
