Sotheby’s to Auction Rare Single-Owner Patek Philippe Collection in New York
The upcoming sale of modern timepieces features several references making their auction debuts and highlights how collectors manage highly coveted provenance.

Sotheby’s is preparing to auction a prominent single-owner collection of Patek Philippe watches in New York this December, with pre-sale expectations of roughly $9 million[1].
The offering is led by a Grand Complication Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar and an Aquanaut Minute Repeater, both making their auction debuts, Robb Report reported.[1] Additionally, Watchpro reported that several of the timepieces in the collection are double-signed, having been originally purchased from Tiffany & Co.[2]
According to Robb Report, the upcoming sale features highly sought-after modern references, nearly all of which are offered by the original buyer with an unbroken chain of ownership.[1] This provenance is particularly notable because large collections of modern Patek Philippe models have rarely appeared at auction recently; secondary-market prices for sport references fell from their peaks of several years ago, causing many owners to hold their watches rather than sell.[1] The upcoming auction serves as a key measure of current secondary demand.

An incredible lineup of Patek Philippe watches will be auctioned off at Sotheby’s Important Watches sale in New York this winter. The references, ranging from a rare diamond-set minute repeater to a coveted Tiffany-signed Nautilus, are nearly all from one horophile’s collection, giving them a high level of provenance uncommon on the secondary market. “Built over many years with extraordinary focus and discernment, the collection brings together some of the most sought-after modern Patek Philippe references, each accompanied by an unbroken chain of ownership from the moment it left the retailer,” Leigh Safar, Sotheby’s global head of Important Watch Collections, said in a statement. “That continuity is exceptionally rare, lending the collection a level of provenance and authenticity that cannot be replicated.” The aptly named Original Owner Collection includes 30 timepieces—most of which have been with the original owner since purchase.
