Bonhams Realizes £2,845,660 at 19th Century and British Impressionist Art Sale

Among the prominent works featured in the sale was Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky's An oxwagon traversing a ford on a moonlit evening. The 1871 oil on canvas, which depicts a Ukrainian landscape, was authenticated by Dr. Gianni Caffiero and came from a private Spanish collection. The auction also presented James Jacques Joseph Tissot's Départ du fiancé (Departure of the Betrothed), an 1861 canvas originally purchased from the artist in 1865 by the French art dealer Adolphe Goupil. Additionally, the sale included Sir Alfred James Munnings's portrait of Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor, a late 1930s commission that descended directly through the Astor family, alongside his early landscape Sunset on the river, Hoxne, painted circa 1909-1911 near the confluence of the rivers Dove and Waveney.
