In a sale that closed on 7 October 2026, the Bonhams Photographs auction achieved a total realized sum of $708,558[1], with 87 of 139 lots finding buyers, representing a 62.6%[1] sell-through rate. Bonhams served as the official results source for this auction, documenting the final transactions across a diverse catalog of historical and contemporary photographic works.
The auction brought together a wide range of photographic history, from mid-century documentary photography to contemporary mural-sized prints. Among the notable offerings was Frank Worth’s portfolio of Marilyn Monroe platinum prints. This portfolio, numbered twelve from an edition of fifteen, contains ten platinum prints, each bearing the Frank Worth Estate blindstamp and edition markings in ink. The portfolio, housed in a red vinyl folio, was acquired directly from the Frank Worth Estate by the owner who consigned it.
Another major historical piece in the sale was Dorothea Lange’s iconic image, "Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California." This gelatin silver print features the photographer's Berkeley, California stamp on the reverse. The provenance of this print traces back to the Edwynn Houk Gallery in New York, from which it was acquired by the consignor. Lange's work remains a cornerstone of American documentary photography, capturing the human experience during times of economic hardship.
Representing contemporary photography, Ahmed Mater’s "Metropolis" from the series "Desert of Pharan" was offered from the collection of a Lady of Title. This mural-sized inkjet print is flush-mounted and framed, representing an Artist's Proof from an edition of five plus two Artist's Proofs. The work, which was acquired directly from the artist, is part of Mater's monumental project documenting the rapid development of Mecca, Islam's holiest city.
Irving Penn’s "Butcher, London" also highlighted the catalog. This platinum-palladium print was hand-coated by the photographer and features his signature, title, date, and edition annotations on the reverse. The print descended to the consignor from a private collection in New York, representing Penn's celebrated "Small Trades" series, which documented workers in London, Paris, and New York.
