Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Design Codes Face Parallel Expansion and Counterfeit Protection
Federal officers intercepted a major shipment of replica watches while the Swiss manufacture launched its first jewelry collection utilizing the same signature visual codes.

Audemars Piguet is expanding its signature Royal Oak design codes into fine jewelry while federal authorities intercept counterfeit shipments targeting the same aesthetic. As the brand seeks to leverage its most recognizable design assets in new luxury categories, the parallel rise in sophisticated replication highlights the intense global demand for its visual identity. This dual reality of brand expansion and aggressive intellectual property enforcement highlights the challenges of managing a highly coveted design language in a globalized market.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, officers intercepted a shipment of counterfeit watches from Hong Kong with an estimated manufacturer's suggested retail value of $12 million[1] had the pieces been authentic. Meanwhile, as reported by Robb Report, the Swiss watchmaker has launched its first jewelry collection, translating the signature interlocking links of the Royal Oak watch bracelet into a multi-piece suite of necklaces, earrings, cuffs, and chokers.
The seizure in Indianapolis highlights the persistent pressure on the secondary watch market from illicit duplication. WWD reported that the intercepted parcel, which was headed to Illinois, contained watches bearing suspected counterfeit trademarks that specialists determined were inauthentic. Federal officers intercepted the parcel at the city’s express consignment facility, highlighting how counterfeiters utilize international shipping networks to distribute replicas. This enforcement action follows other high-value watch seizures at major shipping hubs, demonstrating that counterfeiters continue to target high-end Swiss watch designs to exploit the gap between retail scarcity and secondary-market demand.
Simultaneously, the brand is capitalizing on the strength of these same design codes by diversifying its product offering. Robb Report noted that the new jewelry collection, set with precious stones in gold and titanium, represents a bold foray into luxury's brightest sector. The collection features designs like the Dream of Joux tie-style necklace, crafted in white gold and anodized blue titanium, trimmed with pear-shaped diamonds and blue sapphires, alongside matching earrings and blackened titanium necklaces. By utilizing the recognizable brushed and polished finishes of the Royal Oak bracelet, the manufacture is creating a new category of wearable assets that do not feature a single watch movement but rely entirely on the aesthetic equity of the original design.
The federal agency lists watches and jewelry among product categories at higher risk of counterfeiting, alongside other luxury items like handbags, wallets, and consumer electronics. CBP advises shoppers to buy directly from trademark holders or authorized retailers to avoid fraudulent merchandise. This warning highlights the growing friction in the secondary market, where transactions increasingly occur through online or third-party vendors. As Michael Pfeiffer, acting director of field operations for CBP’s Chicago Field Office, stated, officers are at the frontline to guard against defrauders expecting to make money selling fake merchandise.
The jewelry designs draw direct inspiration from the watchmaker's home in the Vallée de Joux, translating elements like frozen lakes, local forests, and local flowers into high-jewelry pieces. For example, the Risoud Eclipse necklace and cuff, named after a local forest, feature blackened titanium and white gold set with emeralds and diamonds. There are also several bejeweled cuffs, such as the Sunburst Royal Oak cuff set with orange and yellow sapphires, and the Blueberries Royal Oak cuff which depicts a blueberry bush branch using leaf-shaped diamonds and amethyst cabochons. This deep connection to the brand's heritage and geography serves to reinforce the authenticity of the new collection, distinguishing it from unauthorized replicas.
For market participants tracking brand equity, these developments show that the value of a luxury house is increasingly tied to its design IP rather than its mechanical movements alone. The transition of the Royal Oak aesthetic into fine jewelry demonstrates how a single design language can support multiple product lines. However, the scale of the counterfeit market, as evidenced by the multi-million-dollar valuation of the seized shipment, means that verification and provenance remain paramount for anyone transacting in these high-value assets.

CBP Seizes 300 Fake Audemars Piguet Watches in IndianapolisOct 16, 2026
Source passage
U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized 300 counterfeit Audemars Piguet watches from a shipment passing through Indianapolis, the agency announced Friday. Officers intercepted the parcel Oct. 14 at the city’s express consignment facility. It had arrived from Hong Kong and was headed to Illinois. CBP put the shipment’s combined manufacturer’s suggested retail price at $12 million, had the watches been genuine. That figure represents the retail price of authentic products, rather than an appraisal of the seized counterfeits . Officers found watches bearing suspected counterfeit Audemars Piguet trademarks during an inspection. Specialists at CBP ’s Centers of Excellence and Expertise determined that the items were inauthentic, and the agency seized them for bearing counterfeit versions of registered and recorded trademarks. “As consumers increasingly purchase from online or third-party vendors, our officers are at the frontline to guard against defrauders expecting to make money selling fake merchandise,” Michael Pfeiffer , acting director of field operations for CBP’s Chicago Field Office, said in a statement. The release did not identify the sender or recipient beyond the shipment’s origin and destination or announce any arrests or charges. The Indianapolis seizure follows other recent interceptions of counterfeit watches. On Sept. 18, CBP officers at Chicago O’Hare Internatio
